Critically Acclaimed Chef Justin Smillie opens Miami outpost of hit NYC eatery, UPLAND, in partnership with restaurateur, Stephen Starr (Starr is known for Steak 954 at the W Hotel Fort Lauderdale, Makoto and Le Zoo in Bal Harbour Shops and NYC’s Buddakan and El Vez). The Upland Miami menu will mirror that of the New York location, showcasing Smillie’s sophisticated sensibility, rustic and seasonally influenced, California-inspired fare. Dishes range from expertly prepared fresh pastas, pizzas, vegetables and wood-fired proteins. Standouts include a Little Gem Salad with avocado, cucumber, ricotta salata and walnut vinaigrette; Pappardelle with spicy sausage ragù, kale and parmigiano; and Roasted Short Rib for Two with castelvetrano olives, walnuts, celery and horseradish. The wine list is extensive, with a focus on American, Italian and French wines.
“South Florida and Southern California have similar tastes in food – health conscious consumers with sophisticated tastes – and we look think Upland will be a great fit for Miami Beach,” said Smillie of the move. “The partnership with Starr has been fantastic and I look forward to joining Starr Restaurants’ Florida family.”
Upland Miami features indoor and outdoor seating and a gorgeous modern bistro setting with an open exhibition kitchen. Smillie and Starr collaborated with Roman & Williams, the visionaries responsible for the design of Upland NYC. Design elements include walls lined with wine and preserved lemons and artichokes, reminiscent of the restaurant’s NYC décor.
Upland is now open for dinner reservations and will open for lunch and weekend brunch in coming weeks.
Upland Miami is located at 49 Collins Ave., Miami Beach
